R&R Apothecary was founded by a mother seeking a cream that would suit her baby's eczema and extremely sensitive skin. Baby Ryu started to developed eczema on his cheeks after his vaccination jab when he was sixth month old. He also has developed sensitive skin, crawling on play mat and any surface cleaned with strong detergents would redden his face, arms and legs. Hooi Lin had been using the pharmaceutical emollients and non-steroid creams prescribed by her pediatricians and dermatologists but they either not working or irritated Ryu’s skin further. Hooi Lin also tried various alternative creams and lotions from overseas but they inflamed Ryu's poor skin.

Hooi Lin began attending classes to learn the traditional recipes for moisturizers that could be used on very sore and itchy skin, but she realized that fragrances and preservatives were still used during the classes. This means that those lotions and creams made learnt during classes were not able to apply on Ryu’s skin since he is sensitive to any fragrances, preservatives and surfactants.

Understandably, Hooi Lin was desperate to find a product Ryu could use. She wanted to make a moisturizing cream that didn't contain anything unnecessary or that might trigger an allergic reaction. No preservatives, no unnecessary fragrances, no chemical emulsifiers or ingredients only there for the sake of appearance. It had to be totally natural and as mild as possible.

Hooi Lin started experimenting with cooking up traditional ointments and salves in her kitchen; she used combinations of herbs and oils such as shear butter, beewax, calendula, sea buckthorn and Tamanu etc. that are proven to heal skins. To her great delight and relief, the salve she eventually came up with was soft and gentle and worked really well as a natural moisturizer to hydrate and maintain the health of Ryu's sensitive skin.

To her surprised, she found out that the cream was also working on insect bites, cuts, dry skin, psoriasis, healing closed wounds etc. Hooi Lin then started making up batches of what was to become R&R Healing Cream, which was named after her 2 boys, Roy & Ryu, for friends and relatives. This led to her founding R&R Apothecary , becoming a NAHA certified aroma therapist and going on to develop other natural skincare products, including R&R Deodorants series, R&R Hair Loss Shampoo , R&R Pure Castile Soap, and some essential inhalers and rubs especially for children.
